- The challengers must checkmate the chess engine (CE) to win.
- The challengers may use any form of printed or electronic chess
literature to analyze their position (eg books, monographs, CD game
databases etc) but may not use any kind of chess engine, chess playing
software, stand-alone chess-playing boards or similar devices. The CE will
play solely on the merits of its current programming. Likewise, all players,
including the CE operator (Steve Ryan), may not consult with any other chess players
on any aspect of the games in progress.
- Rate of play = 10 moves in 40 days of RT. RT starts when a legal move
arrives on the 3 servers involved in this match. Both the challengers and
the CE may carry forward any unused RT to the next 10 moves.
- Calculation of RT will involve weekdays only, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday except as outlined in rule 5.
- Calculation of RT will exclude the following days in addition to those of
rule 4: 1999 Dec.24, 25, 26, 31; 2000 Jan 01.
- All participants will have 30 days of vacation time per match for use at
one or more days at a time. Except for drastic unforeseen personal
circumstances and unexpected repairs to the computer all players will give
at least 3 days notice of forthcoming vacation time.
- After the 10th move neither the CE or the challengers shall send more
than one move per day.
- Typographical or other kinds of "clerical errors" of all participants
resulting in gross blunders and impossible/illegal moves shall become
eligible for correction by the agreement of both players.
- Volker Jeschonnek will play one game only against the CE with colour
determined by coin toss.
- All players agree to the posting of these rules on The Correspondence
Chess Message Board, the Campbell Report and Ralph Marconi's Chess page for
the information of all interested parties.
- Steve Ryan will post full technical details of the computer system and
chess engine.
