He said, "My competitive instincts tell me to continue." Such competitive instincts are a great value to a tournament player, and I wouldn't have been offended if he had continued. Of course, I was lucky in this game. It's not often a strong opponent misplays an opening to the extent of losing a piece ... something McLaughlin has probably never done before.
